What do you look for in a landscape designer?
The truth is, it really can be hard to locate a landscape designer that you feel you can trust. I remember when we used to offer mowing services and my clients would ask me if I knew of any good landscape designers. I was always puzzled by these questions, not because I didn't understand what they were asking, but because every designer has a certain style that they use. The truth is that there are principles that make a good design, but what you need to decide is the style of landscape that you're looking for. Once you decide the style, a good designer can listen to you and assemble a good design around the style that you have chosen.
One of the hardest people to design for is those that do not really have a preference on what they like and don't like.
The style of your landscape should revolve around your personality. This means that you should be on high alert to anything in the design that doesn't fit you perfectly. This can be really hard to do if your designer is designing with an architectural drawing, as you will not be able to see how the different plants are effecting your design.
When choosing a landscape designer, I know you want to choose wisely, after all time is money, and designs take time. There is nothing worse than putting a lot of work explaining what you really want to a designer only to have him or her bring back something that seems as though they were not listening at all.

Believe it or not, a new landscape is not all fun and games. Sometimes it can be frustrating, because the plants that you are installing are living things, and living things have unpredictable issues sometimes.
I remember a landscape we did a few years ago in Huntsville AL. We had planted 2 Emerald Green Arbervitae. (In case you do not know what an Arbervitae is, just think about those really tall evergreen trees that grow in a column shape.) 2 weeks later one of them was turning almost completly brown, we could tell it was going in to shock. We came out and replaced it 4 weeks later the new one had died completely. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, I went out to make sure these plants were being watered and cared for, and it was obvious that all the other plants out there were being watered very well. So we replaced it again, this time it took and it is just as pretty as ever.
The point of this little story is that landscaping can be difficult, you have to be patient with plants, and be ready to nurture them if the time comes to do so.
There are also great things about landscaping that you should know. Landscaping is like creating your own little world that you can disappear into every once in a while. It also provides a natural softener to the harsh foundation look.
Landscaping can also raise the value of your home, I know you have probably heard this before, and it is tricky to understand. Landscaping does not directly raise the value of your home, however, it does provide a better package for your home, which raises the eyebrows of more viewers, which in turn increases the chances of you getting the price you want out of your home.
